The logo and demo-reel video above represent the “personal brand” I created and used for more than 20 years of video production, web design and marketing communications consulting work. Before that, I’d never given my personal brand a second thought.
My desire to start my own company came from two things. First, I was unhappy in my job as a marketing manager for a startup wireless communications company. Second, dating back to my ten years as an award-winning radio sportscaster, I always envied my friends in television. They had something I did not: a visual medium with which to tell stories.
In a job I loved and left to take the job I loathed, I produced a number of video presentations. My job was to hire and manage professional production companies to shoot and edit my projects. In time I thought, “I can do that.” So, I borrowed a friends camcorder, found a local charitable organization which needed a video, and created my first “film.” It turned out well, so well that it inspired a $25,000 donation after it was unveiled at the organization’s annual fundraising banquet.
So, I found another good cause and created another video, and then did the whole thing again...all at no charge to the organizations. They needed videos. I wanted the experience to try and accomplish something that seemed interesting and enjoyable to me.
FInally, in 1998, I pulled the plug on my steady-paycheck existence and, as a self-employed entrepreneur, quickly realized I needed to create my own personal brand. Thus was born Turn-Key VideoWorks, a banner under which I grew my venture for the next 20 years.
