Stimulating. Transformative.

Stories both connect and persuade us. Stories form the basis for how we think about the world and live out our lives. English author Phillip Pullman says, "After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world," and I agree.

Stories are a powerful form of marketing, whether in selling a product or service, or in selling ourselves. Ira Glass, host of NPR's This American Life, once said, "Great stories happen to those who can tell them."

I've been telling stories most of my life, in the form of books, magazine articles, newspaper accounts, broadcasts, social-media posts, websites, videos, press releases, public relations pitches and poetry. My hope is that more than a few of those stories have been–for the readers and viewers–both stimulating and transformative.

I invite.you to peruse the pages of this website for samples of my work. And, if you have a story you think needs to be told, it would be my privilege to collaborate with you to do that.

A Look Inside
Disaster City

As a part of the A&M System, the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service operates two of the world’s premiere first-responder training facilities. One is the Brayton Fire Training Field, established in 1960.

The other is called “Disaster City.”

You know of the “Windy City” and “Clutch City,” and no doubt have heard of the “City of Brotherly Love.”

Disaster City is a different kind of place which sprang from the mind of a visionary thinker in the aftermath of an unimaginable occurrence.

No Hard Feelings

This story appeared in the Edmond Sun newspaper the week before the October 19, 1985 Oklahoma-Miami football game in Norman, Oklahoma. The contest marked Miami Head Coach Jimmy Johnson’s return to the Sooner state after coaching the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 1979 to 1983. That return prompted some less-than-fond recollections for me.

Breaking Away

Upon moving to College Station in 2017, I thought, "Wouldn't it be interesting to explore the reasons behind Texas A&M's move to the Southeastern Conference?" When the Aggies departed the Big 12 in 2011, they ended their longstanding and historic rivalry with the Texas Longhorns. Why? Remarkably, I had the opportunity to write about just that–and shed new light on the matter–in my book Breaking Away.

Brazos Valley Prayer Breakfast

In the spring of 2023, I met longtime Bryan dermatologist Dr. Terry Jones. After he told me about his desire to establish a meaningful prayer breakfast for the Brazos Valley region of Central Texas, I agreed to help him with the task. This video captures the highlights of what turned out to be a remarkable and blessed first-time event attended by more than 600 people at the Legends Event Center in Bryan's Midtown Park.

Life in the Late Innings

One of the many benefits of moving to the College Station area with my wife in 2017 was getting to see our friend, Wally Moon, much more frequently than when we lived in Houston.

Spending time with Wally became a valued part of my life's new routine after our move.

In the years in which I knew Wally, the passing of time definitely slowed him down a little. Despite that, Wally's mind remained sharp and his spirit willing. It was always a treat to pay a call on him at the retirement community where he lived out the last years of his life. It was there, near the end of 2017 and just a few months before his death in February of 2018, we hatched the idea for a newspaper column on the subject of growing old. We called it, "Life in the Late Innings."

The Virtual Chef

Ten years have passed since local restaurateur Tai Lee–better known as “Chef Tai” to his immense legion of fans–won the Food Network’s “America’s Favorite Food Truck” competition, in large part because of his immense legion of fans.

Much has changed in the ensuing decade, save for the truck, or rather, the “Chef Tai Mobile Bistro.”

“It’s the same vehicle which earned me the 'Favorite Food Truck' title,” Tai says today. “If you recall, it was the first food truck in the Bryan/College Station area back in 2010.”

Sixty thousand miles later, its still catering great food to good people.
